Made of Gourd

The Waterdrum is made up of two large hollowed-out gourd halves. The larger half is filled with water, while the smaller half sits on top, floating upside down on an air bubble. When played, with the hands or a padded mallet, the smaller half produces a gentle sound, reminiscent of being underwater. The water level influences the sound pitch.

The waterdrum is traditionally played by women of the Senufo and Malinke-People in Africa.

The smaller half of the gourd has Ø approx. 25cm, the larger half Ø 43cm.
