HISTORY & CONSTRUCTION
The harmonium was originally introduced to India as a mobile substitute for the organ by Christian missionaries. Because of its easy handling, it not only developed into a popular instrument of Indian folk and religious music but became firmly established as an accompanying instrument in classical North Indian Raga music. The harmonium is, in principle, an closed wooden box into which air is blown by means of manual bellows. Via a keyboard, small holes in this box are caused to open. Thus the compressed air can escape through them. The air is set vibrating by a small metal plate placed in the opening (the so-called reed) - the same mechanism of sound generation as the accordion.
Harmoniums can produce chords, melody and drones all at once. They create a warm, rich, natural sound and are easy to play. These features make them the most popular instruments for the accompaniment of any style of classical, devotional or popular singing in India. Their keyboard makes them perfectly compatible to Western music, too.
HARINAM HARMONIUM
The Tirupati Harinam is a particularly small, light and sturdy harmonium with sharp and powerful sound. Its small bellows, however, give it very little sustain and limit its range of dynamic variation. Not recommended for beginners, but great for experienced musicians on the road, to accompany kirtans and group singing and for playing with strong rhythmic accents.
Producing long and steady chords or playing with dynamic variations is difficult on the Tirupati Harinam and requires certain practice. The low weight and the small dimensions result from an intelligent construction without awkward folding mechanism. The slanting keyboard level when putting the Harinam on a flat surface needs some getting used to. However, the keyboard level gets horizontal when the player sits cross-legged and rests the harmonium's front side on his / her lap. Each note has two reeds in simple quality in middle and low register (male / bass), giving the Harinam a sharp and powerful sound. Male and bass reeds always play together, because there is no register separation. The external bellows at the back open to the top and fill up automatically when the latch is opened. For playing one has to pull them against a little resistence. The internal bellows are visible and open to the bottom. Their removable springs on both sides can be used to adjust the bellows tension and thus the volume and sustain. The tonal range is smaller than in full size harmoniums, but sufficient for all common mantras and kirtans. The Harinam harmonium can also be played standing by fixing a shoulder strap to the attached rings.
Features:
32 simple stick keys
range of two and a half octaves from F to C
two reeds in middle and low register for each note
low range F2 - C5, middle range F3 - C6
double fold external bellows with top opening and spring
tension of internal bellows adjustable with removable springs
glossy shellac polish

cloth cover over the keyboard mechanism
incl. shoulder strap
incl. padded bag

Pine wood is the first choice for harmoniums around Delhi and in North Western India. It is much softer than teak wood, which is more common in Mumbai and Calcutta. Therefore pinewood harmoniums often get little dents or scratches during manufacturing, storage or transit to Europe. Such marks are a natural property of the wood and can not be seen as flaws or defects.
Tirupati is the international brand name for instruments from Sharma Musicals in Ghaziabad, a neighbouring city of Delhi. Sharma Musicals was founded in 1934 by Jagdish Prasad Sharma and is today one of the leading Indian harmonium makers. The current manager Mayank Sharma runs the business in the fourth generation. Thanks to solid infrastructure, long experience and good quality awareness, Sharma Musicals is a reliable supplier of all harmonium models typical of Delhi and North-West India. Instruments from Sharma Musicals are also marketed in the USA and are sold there under the name Bhava Harmonium. They are recommended by renowned kirtan teacher Daniel Tucker.
BASIC HARMONIUM
The Tirupati Basic is a particularly simple, small, light, robust and inexpensive harmonium with a warm sound. It is ideal for on the go, for practicing, as a second instrument for lessons and workshops, as an introduction for children, as a shrutibox replacement, as well as for all those who simply want to try themselves out.
The Tirupati Basic has only a single set of reeds in the bass register for sound production. This makes it sound less rich, impressive and complex compared to other harmoniums, but still pleasantly soft, warm and full. The absence of extras like a second or third reed set, separate air chambers, drone notes, octave coupler or scale changer makes this harmonium surprisingly light. Despite its small size, it is still relatively easy to play simple chords evenly without getting disturbing volume fluctuations or to play quite softly - after all only a single set of reeds needs air supply. Thanks to the very simple construction without any frills, the Tirupati Basic is also particularly robust. It is certainly not suitable for the big stage, but can be a great friend in everyday life!
Features:
27 simple stick keys
range of two octaves and one whole tone from G2 to A4
one reed per note in bass register
top fold bellows
high-gloss shellac polish
cabinet made of pine wood
removable cover (jali) over key mechanism
metal handles
incl. padded bag with shoulder strap
Size: height 23 cm, width 39 cm depth 24 cm
Weight: 4 kg
Each instrument is individually hand-crafted and might differ from our description.
Pine wood is mainly used in the area around Delhi for harmoniums and is much softer than the teak wood used in Mumbai and Kolkata. This is why many pine harmoniums already get small dents or other blemishes during production and transport to Europe - these are caused by the material and are not to be regarded as defects.

MINI KIRTAN HARMONIUM
The Kirtan Mini harmonium from Tirupati is ideal for frequent travellers among yogis and kirtan singers. Considering its small size and simple features, it has an amazing sustain and sound quality.
Construction, playability and sound quality are equivalent to our Kirtan Classic harmoniums from Tirupati and Paloma, as well as the 23 B from Bina and other similar models of other brands. The Tirupati Kirtan Mini has a smaller range and a little less sustain though. It has no octave coupler and only two instead of three or four drone notes. This somewhat
limits the possibilities of artistic expression, but hardly matters for the accompaniment of mantras, chants and kirtans.
Thanks to Krishna Das or Jai Uttal, the design with fold-down bellows, integrated case, double reeds and simple stick keys is a classic in the western kirtan scene. Its simplicity makes it both inexpensive and robust. Double reeds provide a full, warm sound. And its fold-down bellows, low weight and small format make it so compact that you can easily carry it with just one hand.
Features:
32 simple stick keys
range of two and a half octaves from F to C
two reeds in middle and low register for each note
low range F2 - C5, middle range F3 - C6
2 register stops for separate or combined use of middle and low register
2 stops for drone notes
double fold external bellows with top opening
removable cover with opening option (jali) over key mechanism
glossy shellac polish
folding mechnism into integrated case
cabinet made of pine wood
incl. padded bag
Size (closed case): height 18 cm, width 49 cm, depth 31 cm
Weight: 7.7 kg

KIRTAN 23B HARMONIUM
The Kirtan Premium is an improved version of the popular Kirtan 23 B. Thanks to world-renowned kirtan singers like Krishna Das and Jai Uttal the 23 B is probably the most famous and most popular harmonium model in the western kirtan scene. The simple construction makes it sturdy on the road. It's easy to move around thanks to its compact dimensions in folded state. And double reeds and octave coupler provide for full, warm, bright sound. A good choice for beginners as well as for ambitious kirtan singers.
The 42 keys give a range of three and a half octaves from c to f. Each note is fitted with two reeds in middle and low octave (male / bass). They can be played separately or in combination, giving three different tonal colours. The multifold back bellows opens to the side. An octave coupler connects the keys to higher octave notes for a brighter sound, but also leads to higher air consumption. The octave coupler can be activated or deactivated according to the requirements.

PREMIUM HARMONIUM
Paloma's premium model D 39-4 is the right choice for musicians looking for a high quality instrument with full tonal range and a rich carrying sound for regular use (e.g. for accompaniment of singing groups or playing together with other instruments). Compared to our standard models the crfatsmanship and materials are much better, the sound is a bit more round and balanced and the key mechanism is considerably improved.
Its 39 keys give a range of three octaves and two half note steps. Each key is equiped with two reeds (D = double reeds) in middle and low octave. By adjusting the register stops these two reeds can be played simultaneously or separately. Paloma premium D 39-4 has four built-in drone stops. Other drone notes can be obtained easily by removing the springs on the key ends or by putting half clothe-pegs on top of the keys. The bellows are open to the top. They fold out an fill themselves automatically when unlocked. You just need to pull them towards yourself for playing - always against a little resistence, though.
A unique Paloma feature is the surface treatment: Instead of the usual glossy shellac polish all surfaces have been treated with wax in order to enhance the beauty of the natural wood veining. Wax finish is less prone to heat damages and makes it much easier to remove scratches and bruises, too.

WHAT IS A SHRUTIBOX AND HOW IS IT PLAYED?
The shrutibox is a perfect accompaniment for modal music, improvisation, voice work, overtone singing, music therapy and all kinds of Indian music. It gives a full, supporting drone sound and is sturdy, mobile and extremely easy to handle. In order to get started you first need to unlock the wooden latches of the bellows on both sides. Next you open the levers for the notes you like to sound. Finally you gently move the open bellows on one side - and there unfolds your drone! Your second hand is not required for playing - it remains free all the time.
WHO CAN USE A SHRUTIBOX?
The shrutibox needs neither tuning nor an elaborate playing technique. Thus it is equally suitable for complete musical beginners and for professional musicians, teachers, therapists and performers. It produces a pleasant natural acoustical carpet of sound for any kind of work and allows to keep full concentration on singing, talking, watching or moving while being played.
CONSTRUCTION
The shrutibox, also called surpeti, produces a powerful, carrying drone sound and is extremely easy to play. It is ideally suited for accompanying any kind of Indian music, voice work, modal improvisation or overtone singing, or Indian wind instruments, especially the bansuri (bamboo flute). Sound and tone production are similar to that of a harmonium or an accordion: metal reeds inside the instruments are caused to vibrate by compressed air passing by them. The air movement is controlled by two bellows on both sides of the instrument. One side carries 13 levers. Opening them allows the air to stream out from the inside and causes the reed underneath the lever to produce a note. The shrutibox covers a full octave of 13 chromatic half notes. That way you can freely choose a tonic that best suits your specific requirements. For a particularly rich and full sound it is advisable to add a fifth or a lower fourth to the tonic. Any other combination is possible as well, of course.
Its advantage over the harmonium is:
small and hence much lighter
the drone notes are fixed and hence
less prone to mistakes especially by untrained players
It costs less
It's easy to transport
It's easily tuneable
HOW TO PLAY
The shrutibox can be played with one hand either sitting or standing or even walking. First you have to open the side levers that lock the whole instrument. Then you open the levers for the desired notes - this side should be facing you. Now put your hand on top of the instrument and press the side without the levers towards yourself. The volume can be adjusted by varying the tempo and pressure applied to the bellows. When you loosen the pressure of your fingers the bellows will automatically unfold and you can press again to get a continuous sound. If you slip your hand through the handle on top of the instrument you can carry and play it at the same time with just one hand. Alternatively you can also put a strap through the handle and hang it around your neck.
STRAIGHT TIPS FOR PLAYING
It is best to keep the shrutibox standing on even ground or any stable support. Alternatively it can be carried on its handle to allow free movement while playing. Volume and continuity of sound depend upon the speed and pressure of the movement of the bellows. You will get a feel for that in no time. A particularly round and beautiful drone is created by adding the fifth or the fourth above the chosen fundamental (also called "tonic"). Other combinations of notes are possible as well according to individual preferences - from straight major chords to dissonant clusters. But watch out: More sounding notes mean more air consumption - harder pumping is required in order to maintain a steady sound!
HISTORY
The shrutibox has been developed from the European harmonium, which had been brought to India by missionaries in the 19th century. It is also called surpeti and is traditionally used mainly for vocal accompaniment of folk or religious music. Its lack of a keyboard makes it a pure drone instrument. Drones are continuously sounding single or multiple notes, whose uninterrupted presence creates an open space of sound. This space can be filled by melodies or other musical structures. The idea of drone is an essential part of Indian music. However drones are known in Western music, too, especially in its more ancient forms. Some Western instruments like the bagpipe or the hurdy-gurdy even have drones built in.

MONOJ KUMAR SARDAR - MEDIUM
Our shrutibox Monoj Kumar Sardar medium is a great all-purpose box with a balanced, warm, full sound and attractive solid wood design.
The shrutibox medium combines the pros of bigger and smaller shrutiboxes into an interesting hybrid. It is considerably lighter than Monoj Kumar Sardar’s shrutibox large, making it a rather pleasant instrument to carry. At the same time it has noticeably bigger bellows than Monoj Kumar Sardar’s and Paloma’s shrutiboxes small, which even facilitates a fairly constant sound of chords. The shrutibox medium is the only Monoj Kumar Sardar model with side parts made of solid wood instead of laminated wood, giving it an especially attractive appearance.
Including a carrying bag. Tonal range: 13 chromatically tuned notes from c to c' (C3 to C4 in scientific terms). Each instrument is individually hand-crafted and might differ from our description.

PALOMA - LARGE
The shrutibox Paloma large is a heavier box with a particularly balanced, warm, full sound and unmatched dynamic range. The unique bamboo look, silk mat surfaces and fine workmanship make this a truly exquisite instrument
The large frame provides a much larger bellows volume as compared to smaller models, which permits an accurate dosing of air supply. Triple bellows on both sides give it an even bigger bellows volume than the large shrutibox from Monoj Kumar Sardar. In this way, the sound can be kept constant without any effort or prior practice even when up to four notes are played simultaneously. Moreover, the volume can be varied wider and finer than in any other of our shrutiboxes – from whispering tender and low to constantly powerful loud. The larger resonating chamber provides for a somewhat fuller overall sound. Despite its larger dimensions and heaviness, Paloma’s shrutibox large can still be taken around easily. Only if you have to carry a lot of other stuff and if you are travelling by public transport or by foot, shape and weight might become inconvenient. Including a carry bag.

The Bowring foot pedal offers the perfect solution for hands-free playing of our Shruti Boxes, opening up new musical possibilities for string, wind, handpan and percussion instrument players. It is easy and satisfying to play, with smooth control of loudness and sustain.
The Bowring foot pedal has been designed for shrutiboxes by Monoj Kumar Sardar. It can be used for shrutiboxes with likewise construction from other manufacturers as well (e.g. our small Paloma shrutibox). However, its usability for our large Paloma shrutibox is limited, because it does not allow full opening of the bellows and has a delay in reset.
And ... I've tried it while sitting on the floor. It works!!
Folded the foot pedal measures 22cm x 9cm x 3cm and weighs 600g.

B11 "Melody" - G major
Kalimbas are metal-tined Instruments which originated in southern Africa and which can be found there in countless variations. Our Kalimba B11 'Melody' is made of solid American block cherry wood and meticulously hand-crafted. The surfaces are treated and polished with natural oils and waxes. The 11 tines are precisely tuned to the scale of G-Major, so that a large number of well-known songs can be played. The 'Melody' is also ideal for improvisation and intuitive playing.
We have positioned the long and short tines alternately to ensure ease of playing and in accordance with acoustic criteria. The six shorter tines have been bent so that their ends are raised above the level of the longer ones so that they can easily be reached by the thumbs. When playing from the low to the high tones, the five long tines are plucked alternately by the thumbs beginning in the middle and moving outwards - the right thumb begins on Tine No. 6 - then the six shorter tines follow, also played from the middle outwards, whereby the left thumb begins on Tine No. 5.

The instrument comes with a carrying pouch and a tuning hammer.
made of Koa Wood
KALIMBA-SANSULAS: The fairyteller instrument, that almost plays by itself. Traditionally coming
from the Griots in Africa.
The Sansula is a Kalimba on a drum skin. Its enchanting and wondrous minor-tuning has found thousands
of enthusiasts worldwide. When you play it, resting on your lap, some spherical-effects can be made by
lifting up and putting down the instrument on your lap.
SANSULA BASIC - A minor pentatonic The Sansula belongs to the family of the Kalimba and can be played just as easily. The instrument, with its patented suspended mounting of the resonating block, is an innovation entirely of our own design.
Since its launching in 2001, the Sansula has quickly become a best-seller and found thousands of friends at home and abroad.
The special feature of the Sansula is its unbelievable sound. Whereby the clear and aesthetic design is most appealing. The oval frame of laminated beech wood is fitted with a membrane which, together with the resonating block, produces a prolonged, soft tone. Furthermore, an impressive ‘wah-wah’ effect can be produced by holding the instrument against the body, on the thigh or laying it on a table and then alternately raising and lowering it while playing.
The tuning – in a-minor with additional tines pitched at B and F – allows wonderful melodies to be produced almost of their own accord, simply by plucking the tines with the thumbs. As all the notes harmonize with each other, beginners also enjoy immediate success with their instrument.
Note: because of the delicate cellulose membrane, this Sansula Basic model is not suitable for small children. It is fitted with a cellulose skin which, while possessing excellent acoustic qualities, can easily be damaged by sharp objects or even simply by being dropped (repair is possible - ask us). We offer the Sansula Deluxe and the Sansula Renaissance as a more robust alternative.
Measurements: 198 x 155 x 67mm
The Sansula basic is also available in other tunings:
A-major
Ake Bono (Japanese)
Hijaz (Arabic)
A-minor7
Pygmy (African)

SANSULA DELUXE - A minor pentatonic The Sansula Deluxe is a further development of the Sansula Basic. In response to the wishes expressed by many customers, we have fitted it with a robust membrane of genuine goatskin and an adjustable tension device. These modifications greatly increase the range of possibilities of the instrument.
The natural materials used make each of the Deluxe models supplied unique, characterized by an even richer and warmer sound while at the same time being more robust.
Whereas the basic Sansula model is too delicate for use by small children, the Sansula Deluxe can be used in nurseries and music schools without fear of the instrument being easily damaged. The Sansula Deluxe must, however, be handled with the same reasonable care as all musical instruments.
The tuning – a-minor with additional tines pitched at B and F – allows wonderful melodies to be produced almost of their own accord, simply by plucking the tines with the thumbs. As all the notes harmonize with each other, beginners also enjoy immediate success with their instrument.

SANSULA RENAISSANCE - A minor pentatonic This year we are pleased to present an interesting product innovation.
The Sansula Renaissance is a particularly robust model, fitted with hard-wearing REMO (USA) membrane. Due to this innovation, the Renaissance is not only insensitive to moisture but also suitable for use by children.
The Sansula Renaissance has been developed to combine the best features of the other models in one.
While the Sansula Basic instrument has a relatively delicate membrane, the Renaissance is fitted with a robust REMO (USA) drum skin. The Sansula Renaissance is resistant to moisture, so it retains its tension under conditions of varying air humidity and thus also retains its wonderful sound.
Furthermore, the new membrane is now much more robust. The instrument can be used in children’s nurseries and play groups without the risk of it being easily damaged.
The appearance of the Sansula Renaissance differs from that of the other models in that it is fitted with a rounded wooden rim. Most importantly, the Sansula Renaissance has inherited the indescribable sounds of the Sansula Basic.
The tuning of the instrument, in a-minor with additional B and F, allows wonderful melodies to be produced, almost by themselves, by plucking the tines with the thumbs.

After more than 20 years, Shanti stopped its production in 2009. Two new companies were founded to produce similar chimes: KOSHI and ZAPHIR (see hereunder).
The ZAPHIR windchime is an authentic musical instrument. Each part is being hand made by dedicated craftsman in the Zaphir workshop in the heart of the Pyrenees, in the original design that was created for the Shantis. Eight rods of different length are welded with silver into a metal plate at the base of the resonance tube. Through precise tuning of the different tonal ranges - following the natural principles of the law of equilibrium, called "the Golden Ratio" - the harmonic progression of tones switching into overtones gets into a circular flow.
All Zaphir chimes have the same dimensions. Cylindre: Length +/-125 mm, diameter +/- 65mm.
Use: The different tunings and specific timbres of the Zaphir chimes, combined with their coloured design, may join the natural frequencies of seasons, the elements, or chakras, and are often used in sound therapies, for relaxation or healing. Allthough the sound has a wonderful effect on babies and children, the chime is not a toy. Hold the instrument by the upper cord and move it gently. Outside, sheltered from rain a light breeze will stirr an unexpected melody... . All chimes are the same size: cylindrical, height +/-12,5 cm, width +/- 6,5 cm, weight 155 gr.
Based on 21 years of experience and success, Kabir, the inventor of the world renowned Shanti chimes, has developed a new chime, with different materials, a new design and new melodies.
The ‘Koshi’ chime is an authentic musical instrument, an original creation of high quality. Hand made at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains, each chime is the result of meticulous craftsmanship. Eight chords are welded with silver into the metal plate at the base of the resonance tube. Precise tuning creates a play of clear tones that is rich in overtones. The overtones of the shorter chords gradually dominate and become fundamentals, thus forming a circular tone range. Koshi chimes come in four tunings (Terra, Aqua, Aria & Ignis). Each has a specific magic timbre and can be played harmoniously with all others. The tube, made in our workshop, consists of bamboo veneer treated with natural oil. Move the chime gently holding it by its cord: the crystalline, relaxing sound may leave you in quiet wonder. Outside, as it plays with the wind it will carry you away on an unexpected melody.
I have used bamboo veneer as it is much stronger than the natural bamboo. A true “resonance tube” of a high acoustic quality is made with thin layers of bamboo. This and a new tuning technique that I developed give the sound even more depth and enrich the harmonics. The diameter of the tube is 6,3 cm and the height is 16,5 cm., 4cm longer than the former Shantis. The Koshi chimes should be good for outdoors use. However, like all wooden objects, they must be regularly treated with a protective oil. I have to admit that for now, without time experience I can’t yet give any guarantee. The sound of the chimes is most wonderful for children. But for security reasons they should not be given in hands of children under three years old.
The Koshi wind chimes are now available in our shop.

Feng Shui Chimes - 5 elements - L 39cm
The original musical scale for these chimes was derived through chance and divination, by casting coins and referencing the I Ching. It is named for the ancient Chinese system of Feng Shui, believed to facilitate the positive flow of qi (or energy flow). One of the basic principles of Feng Shui is the theory of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each chime represents its Feng Shui element with a specific colored stone and Chinese character.

Butterfly chime - L 53cm
This chime's light, airy tones complement the butterfly's carefree dance.
In Robert Frost's first published poem, My Butterfly, he pays homage to the ephemeral beauty of this exquisite creature. We designed this wind chime to do the same. Its gentle tones seem to float on the breeze just like the butterfly as it flutters about our gardens.

Tuned to the chakra frequencies, this windchime features 7 chakra stones.
The 7 stones of this wind chime's clapper are aligned in an ascending column, just as the seven chakras are aligned along the spine in the human body.
Woodstock Chakra Chimes combine color and sound to underscore the ancient meaning of the major energy centers of the human body. Eastern Philosophy can be difficult for the Western scientific mind to assimilate and yet, many of the eastern claims are being proven scientifically as the time-honored truths that they are. According to the traditions, there are 7 basic chakras, which correlate to the seven main nerve ganglia emanating from the spinal column, as revealed through modern studies of physiology. Each Chakra location has a unique meaning, orientation and healing potential. Woodstock Chakra Chimes are intended to remind us of the strength of mind over matter and, through sound, give us a small window into the balance of the physical and metaphysical.

Calm and uplifting - offers a peaceful respite from the hectic world.
Experience the inner quiet that comes from listening to the peaceful patterns of Gregorian chant. Tuned to a medieval scale, this wind chime echoes the vocal music that has been sung as a part of daily devotionals and meditation in the monasteries and churches of Western Europe for more than a thousand years. Many believe this music to have remarkable healing powers. The sound is beautiful, relaxing and mysteriously compelling. Like the free-flowing monophonic lines of the chant, this windchime's resonant tones will surround the listener as the sounds linger in the breeze.

Jade chime - L 55cm
Tuned using the Golden Ratio, this is a sophisticated, elegant chime.
The enchanting sound of this wind chime is the result of a special tuning using the "Golden Ratio." This ratio, discovered by the ancient Greeks, can be found throughout nature. Green jade is a sacred stone of Asia and comes in a variety of shades from creamy sea foam to deep emerald. Jade was often used for buttons, beads and other decorations. Green contains the powerful energies of nature, growth and a desire to expand your horizons. We blended jade-colored stones with other accents to create this beautiful windchime. Let our Jade Chime help to promote change, growth and balance in your life.

Chimes of Java - L 127cm
This exotic-sounding windchime is tuned to the scale of the gamelan degung.
This deep sounding wind chime takes you to the volcanic South Pacific, where magical music is heard every day on the Indonesian island of Java. Tuned to the musical scale of the gamelan degung (suggested to us by the pioneer American composer/instrument builder, Lou Harrison), the Javanese orchestra's intrinsically beautiful music combines simple elements to produce intricate textures. This lush, shimmering sound captivated and inspired musicians from the West such as Claude Debussy and Erik Satie. In fact, Satie first heard a Javanese gamelan orchestra play at the Paris Exposition of 1889 and incorporated its hypnotic effects in his exotic work, Gnossienne. The Chimes of Java will inspire and hypnotize you as you listen to its mysterious melodies.

Chimes of Lun - L 91,4cm
This windchime has a distinctly Chinese tuning that celebrates one of the world's oldest cultures.
The feeling created by this relaxing and tranquil wind chime is credited to an ancient Chinese pentatonic scale introduced in the 27th century BC by Ling Lun, a court musician under Emperor Huang-ti, the legendary Yellow Emperor. Lun first played this musical scale on pan pipes cut from different lengths of bamboo.¿In Chinese mythology, Lun was said to have created bamboo flutes which made the sounds of many birds, including the mythical phoenix.¿The perfect fifth, the basis of the pentatonic scale, is expressed by the ratio 3:2. Lun designed his flutes based on this principle, believing the relationship of 3 to 2 represented the harmony that exists between heaven and earth. In ancient China, music was seen as central to well-being and longevity.

Chimes of Olympos - L 91,4cm
The Chimes of Olympos is tuned to an ancient Greek pentatonic scale.
The original Woodstock Chime!
This mysterious and soothing wind chime plays the ancient Greek pentatonic scale devised by Olympos, Phrygian flutist and lyre player of the seventh century B.C. Olympos is given credit for the introduction of the flute into Greece from Phrygia, thus adding a new instrumental sound to that country. It is said that Olympos was also very inventive with rhythm as well which may just qualify him as the original King of Rhythm and Blues. Because of these contributions, Plutarch, the Greek historian and biographer, named Olympos the father of Greek music. Nearly three thousand years later, the bluesy scale of Olympos, tuned in the pure system of "just intonation," is still heard today on the Japanese koto and on a Woodstock Chime.

Chimes of Orpheus - L 137,2cm
Thick-walled tubes are dramatic to look at and offer resonance that lasts.
Our Windsinger Chimes series combines computer-age technology with the very finest artistry and craftsmanship, allowing you to experience a whole new dimension of beautiful sound. Made from super-think-walled aluminum tubes which are specially-suspended, these wind chimes resonate much longer than other windchimes, bathing you in waves of enduring harmony every time the wind blows.
The Chimes of Orpheus pay tribute to the son of the muse Calliope. In Greek mythology, Orpheus was known as a gifted poet and singer who had the ability to charm all living creatures with his song.
Woodstock Windsinger Chimes are musically-tuned using an ancient system known as "just intonation." This means the frequencies at which the different tubes vibrate are related to one another by simple whole-number ratios. Tones that are related in this way produce the purest, most beautiful musical intervals. This chime is tuned to an ancient Chinese pentatonic scale. Hang the Chimes of Orpheus in your garden and let it charm all who visit your home.

Temple Bells Trio - L 62,2cm
Inspired by ancient Chinese bells, a trio of bells offers a restful tone.
Bells have been used throughout the ages to accompany dance, to provide comfort and to warn of possible danger. The Chinese were the first to control the pitch or note of a bell, making it possible for them to play tunes. Soon bells were being used to accompany worship. On New Year's Eve the bells in Buddhist temples are rung 108 times, once for each of the 108 worldly desires.
In the East bells have become very important and are often decorated with significant symbols. For centuries, tuned bells have been suspended in homes and temples to ward off evil and attract good luck and prosperity. Woodstock Temple Bells are inspired by these ancient bells and work in harmony with the wind to create gentle, soothing tones.

WINDCHIMES VOOR BUITEN - WINDCHIMES FOR OUTDOORS - CARILLONS POUR L'EXTERIEUR

"The Quisca Cactus, which provides the magical body for the rainstick, grows in the Atakama desert at the foothills of the Andes. These cactus live in forests and hold water while they are alive. After they have completed their life cycle, their body dries out and can be used as this magical instrument. The spines are removed, turned around and inserted into the cactus which is then filled with pebbles of different sizes. If you turn the cactus instrument around the pebbles flow over the spines at different speeds, creating the wonderful sound of rain."
ELECTRIFY YOUR SOUL!
The thunder tube creates its song by gently shaking the drum so that the vibrations of the spring are transmitted to the head – creating a unique sound that exists somewhere between a gong and a dijeridoo.
Covered in a lightning graphic, your hands will feel the electricity in the sound you generate.
Can be used as a sonic centering device for friends.
Allow it to reflect the energy of the lightning of your soul.
The Spring Drums’ sound is generated by moving the drum (coil facing downwards) so the vibrations of the spring are transmitted through to the head. The almost indescribable and musically interesting sound has been described as a cross between a cuica, a sheet of thunder, a suspended cymbal roll, and the roar of a lion.
To play it simply grasp the body of the instrument in one hand and shake it with a twisting motion, thus allowing the spring to vibrate. You can create a variety of effects by placing the opposite hand over the top and by scraping the spring or striking the spring while it is in motion

MOI
The Jew's Harp is a small musical instrument which is held against the teeth or lips, and plucked with the fingers. Its appearance in many cultures of the world, and ancient roots, attest to the magical essence of this simple instrument.
How to Play the Jew's Harp:
The Jew's Harp consists of a cast iron or steel frame and a tempered steel tongue. The tongue of the instrument lies between the jaws of the frame and is played by vibrating the tongue, which is done by striking or plucking, with the forefinger.
Take the Jew's Harp lightly in the hand, using care that the hand touches only the frame and not the tongue.
Place the harp against the front teeth, which must be slightly apart.
The upper and lower lips should rest on the top and bottom of the frame.
With your forefinger, pluck the tongue of the Jew's Harp, either by pushing or pulling. While the harp's tongue is in motion, silently pronounce the vowels (A-E-I-O-U). This is an easy way to learn how to produce sounds, which occur by altering the size of the mouth cavity. Using small amounts of air (either inhaling or exhaling) will alter the sound quality. Moving your tongue (thus changing the size of the mouth cavity) and using small amounts of air will, in no time at all, produce many different tones. You then combine this with the rhythmic beat of the music.

DAN MOI (Vietnam)
The Dan Moi is the traditional jew's harp of the Vietnamese mountain people Hmong. Hand-made by a small number of excellent local craftsmen, this brass instrument captivates even novices by being easily playable and having a brilliant sound, rich in overtones. Playing the Dan Moi is effortless and enjoyable. In contrast to other types of trumps, the Dan Moi must not be pressed against ones teeth to produce its full and warm sound. Rather, the instrument is gently rested against the player's lips with one hand while the other plucks the tip of the reed softly.
Moreover, the Dan Moi affords players with an almost unlimited range of possibilities for the creation of sound effects since mouth and tongue are given considerably more freedom than with other types of trums. For example, you may try a simple echo effect by temporarily and rhythmically removing the Dan Moi from your lips, or try a tremolo by moving the tip of your tongue inside your mouth while playing.
The Hmong craftsmen work the Dan Moi so carefully that the slit between frame and reed is barely visible. This ensures a wide variety of sounds, especially in the high ranges.
